The Waterside Restaurant – Cape Town

February 2025

I ate at ‘The Waterside’ during my month-long trip to Cape Town and Stellenbosch. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the Pierhead building in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront area. The restaurant is located just below the ‘Pier Restaurant‘ where I ate a year ago. Like the ‘Pier Restaurant’, the Waterside is also part of the ‘La Colombe’ group.

From our table we enjoyed the view of the harbor of the V & A Waterfront.

My companion just wanted the small lunch menu. As everyone at the table has to order the same menu, I joined in.

The bread course: A creative start! The homemade butter with capers and candied pine nuts is served at the front left. At the back are two baked prawns on wooden sticks.

Pork Belly, Scallop, Corn, Peanut, Szechuan

The next course is called ‘Cactus Garden’. It is a cactus ice cream in the shape of a cactus to neutralize the palate. Fantastic!

Lamb, celeriac, asparagus

Great!

My friend ordered the fish: Linefish, Sri Lankan sour curry, mussel

Local cheese selection: The cheeses were excellent and can compete with Swiss cheese.

My friend ordered the sweet dessert: Jivara chocolate ice cream, strawberry, cardamom, pistachio. Jivara chocolate is a luxurious type of dark chocolate made by the Swiss chocolatier Valrhona. Also an experience!

We were served some delicious friandises with our coffee.

We really enjoyed this lunch in a great setting with a view.

The price for the menu of CHF 67 (EUR 71, USD 74.50) was more than reasonable. The only downer was that the restaurant charged a 14% service charge, although a 13.5% charge was mentioned on the menu.
