December 2025
I visited this restaurant during my trip through Rwanda.
On the day of my departure, I wanted to visit a gourmet restaurant in Kigali. I chose the highly rated Nyurah Restaurant. The restaurant aims to reinterpret traditional recipes from all over Africa using local ingredients. I was not disappointed.
The name of the restaurant comes from the word “Kunyurwa” in Rwanda’s national language, which means “to delight.”
Since I visited the restaurant on December 24, the Christmas menu was already served at noon.

I started with a white wine made from Chardonnay grapes from the Spier Winery near Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The first course was a piece of fish from Lake Kivu. I then neutralized the course with a lemon sorbet. A great start!

The second course consisted of tilapia, another freshwater fish, dried with coffee leaves. It was served with fruit and a light coffee sauce. Another hit!

With the meat, I was served a red wine from the Haute Cabrière winery in the Franshoek wine region in South Africa.
I didn’t know that the Christmas menu was already being served for lunch. I had actually come with the intention of ordering the sirloin steak, which I had seen earlier on the restaurant’s website menu. So I asked if I could have a sirloin steak instead of the chicken breast. The server checked with the kitchen and came back with the news that I could change to the sirloin steak. Great!
The sirloin steak from Rwanda, served with a pepper crust and a red wine sauce, was as good as it looked.

Now for the lava cake with vanilla ice cream. The final course also delighted my soul, living up to the restaurant’s name.

At the end, I even received a Christmas present!

When I peeked into the kitchen, I met the head chef. Odette Nyiranubaha is second from the right. She runs the restaurant together with Fidel Nshimiyimana, who was off work at the time.

The bill came to around EUR 73/USD 85 for the menu, two glasses of wine, and the tip, a very reasonable price.
I can highly recommend this restaurant!
